We have used them primarily for supplemental storage and back-to-disk storage. We typically use iSCSI connections, but sometimes we connect to the QNAP devices with SMB, AFP, and NSF. Overall, the units have performed very well for our needs. The firmware updates have worked with no issues. Performance has met our expectations. When connected via iSCSI to a Windows 2008 R2 server, the units can generate over 1Gbps of sustained traffic. We have seen them run at 10GB/minute. The 4 and 6 drive units with dual 1Gb NIC's have been too slow to use for vSphere iSCSI VMFS volumes for production servers, but they have worked adequately for low usage, non-production, virtual machines. We have experienced recurring problems when using the TimeMachine server service. Frequently TimeMachine on the Mac's reports backup failures (Time Capsules are much more reliable with Macs). It is a truly amazing device. Not only does it have super fast transfer speed, but it has a host of cool features that make networking files a breeze. I have not implemented many of the business features as I am a SOHO user and got it for the speed but these features offer flexibility for future uses. 0 I was considering a slower, less expensive QNAP unit but decided to get the 459 because of the transfer speed. If you can afford the unit you will be happy with the performance. If the cost is too high, consider one of QNAP's lower performing (last years) models. I am very happy with my purchase. Highly recommended. |
