The case for this LaCie unit is nice. Small unit that you can hide just about anywhere if you're using it at home. If it's in an office, it's going to be in a datacenter or closet, so the looks of it won't matter a lot.
Overall the thing is self-explanatory. Plug in one or two ethernet cables into LAN1 (and LAN2 for failover/load balance bonded NICs). Plug in the power, flip the switch. After that, let it pickup the DHCP address, and then use the LaCie software to access it via a web interface for config.
The Web interface is acceptable. It doesn't really give you the ability to get into things at a nitty-gritty level, which is good and bad (depending on what you want to do). However, there are icons and input fields for everything that most people want to do. It can be slow at times, and it seems that a lot of changes that are made to the network settings force a reboot of the unit (which takes about 3 minutes). For an example, I had the two NICs in failover mode, and I... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremeley unreliable product, February 15, 2011
I purchased the LaCie 5big loaded with 10tb of storage to use as a backup to our multimedia business. It would fine for two weeks and then crashed. We tried to mount it and get access to it using different routers, different computers and several different cables. We couldn't get it up enough to ping it so couldn't do diagnostics. We called tech support which was a joke, some person reading off a script with little or no technical knowledge about the product or about networks or raids. We got LaCie to ship us a brand new replacement drive and send back the first one. The second drive gave us connection errors, got it running once and then couldn't get it to work again just like the first drive. We called technical support (silly me)and got the same lack of information or help. Again someone just reading off a script. LaCie agreed to send a third drive which we are in the process of returning.

As a principal in a multimedia firm that has been in business for 20 years, I have... Read more

I've owned this box for quite some time now. Things came to a head a few days ago when a firmware update caused it to lose its configuration and revert to factory defaults. It didn't trash any of the data (thank God), but instead put all of the data in a "Recovery" folder on the default share. The problem now is that it's proving to be nearly impossible to move the data back into the appropriate locations. Their support department says you're supposed to mount the two shares and simply drag the files from one to the other. In other words, you should drive from San Francisco to Oakland via Argentina. When I try, the Finder tells me that moving 100GB will take a MONTH! They do have a file browser that ostensibly is capable of moving files around within the NAS itself, but it basically doesn't work at all. Any time you try to use it to copy anything sizable, you're likely to hang the box, requiring a power-cycle to bring it back.

Oh, and starting the box up takes at least 5... Read more
