| 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful  Great NAS for backup and light file serving duty., By Verified Purchase This review is from: Synology RackStation 4-Bay (Diskless) 1U NAS Rackmount Network Attached Storage RS812 (Silver/Black) (Personal Computers) Setup couldn't be much simpler for a product as versatile as the RS812 and after I completed setting it up and mapping my iTunes library and backup images of our 4 computers to it I haven't had to touch it since, but every time I check on it it's just humming along doing it's thing. I have it loaded up with 4 3TB drives and it still draws very little power(under 60w) which allowed me to consolidate and gain some rack space back by relocating the larger UPS that was required by it's predecessor. The fans are a little loud but still quieter than the Cisco Catalyst switch mounted in the same rack, but they seem to effectively cool the unit so no complaints there either. 0 I'll update my review once I have something go wrong and get to see my data fares. . . from my impression so far it may be a while. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful Great NAS with surprisingly useful provided/available plugins for media sharing/distribution., Verified Purchase This review is from: Synology RackStation 4-Bay (Diskless) 1U NAS Rackmount Network Attached Storage RS812 (Silver/Black) (Personal Computers) Amazing product, way better than expected. 0 The rackmount ears have removable handles in case you want to use those fancy slide out rails the kids are so fond of these days. I took em off and permanently affixed mine to the rack cabinet like god intended. One power cable (included) and network cable (not, but easy enough to make) later and I was off to the races. The install CD includes windows, mac and I think linux installers for their setup utility. After pointing it back to the CD for the NAS software for initialization you can use your browser to run the NAS utilities -- and ssh access. It wasn't totally clear from the website but as a NAS it supports afp,smb,nfs,ftp/sftp/tftp and webdav. I just needed some extra capacity to store system backups, video, and music files. The availability of media server apps to run on the NAS were great additions and helped take load off my main home servers. I have data scattered across installed drives on about 6 computers. After exhaustive research and deliberation I decided on this NAS because I wanted at least 4 drives, a rackmount solution, and wasn't ready to shell out multiple thousands of dollars for an enterprise NAS which would be way overkill for my use. I did consider FreeNAS or roll-your-own linux solution and decided that the time-to-setup savings on this was worth the extra couple hundred bucks. Also, the ARM5 processor in this keeps power consumption at idle to low levels, which 24/7 for the next 5-10 years will add up to a lot of power compared to a full x86 system.I loaded this up with four Western Digital Red 3TB drives which arrived a day earlier.
