I purchased the 212J model first to save some money, and I thought I had the whole nine yards, but this DS212 is in another class. You can check my 212J review in Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS212j (White). Although I don't see any increase in the average transfer speed of DS212--I still get about 30MB/sec with one enterprise HDD--this one is by far a better NAS compared to the "J" model. From the moment you open the box you realize everything about this model is different and more professional. If you are considering all the 212 series' models, and you are serious about these stuffs, just get this one over the "J" model.I could easily use the hard drive configured with 212J in DS212. It just formatted the DSM partition and was ready to go. All my previous information and... I am extremely pleased with both, so far they have been solidly reliable. Granted that it is a little bit pricey I still recommend this product a 100%. Definitely worth every penny. You have to be a little bit computer and Network savvy since this product would pose a challenge for any beginner.A few years ago I started looking for solutions to protect my growing amount of business and home data after a couple of external disk crashes and computer crap-outs. I tried other NAS' with no success. After reading positive reviews about this product I realize that It was going to take a pretty good amount of money and studying to be able to safe-guard my valuable data. It was definitely a step above of what I knew and what I was willing to invest, but it was all worth it. Hardware: Very well made. I bought two Western Digital 2 TB RE4-GP SATA 3 Gb/s Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drives (note... You MUST expect to spend a lot more than just paying for only a DS212 at the end. When done, there would be many upgrades with a complete network system integration.List of gears may need to move up alone with DS212 purchase: 1. You MUST have two (2) HDD. DS212 is diskless and doesn't come with any HDD. It supports HDD up to 3TB in each bay. Check Synology's compatible list before buying nay HDD. 2. Upgrade your home network to gigabit for all capable clients. You may end up getting a new gigabit router and a couple gigabit switches alone with PCI card or wifi-N USB adaptors. I upgraded my router with an ASUS RT-N66U ($180), and replaced two 5-port 10/100 switches with Netgear GS105 ($40 each) and added a 8-port GS108P ($150) for PoE (Power over Ethernet, see 4 for why I need one of these). 3. Expect to replace or add Cat5e or Cat6 cables. Beware that not all cables are made the same. I ran into some issue which gigabit clients... Read more |
