I just wanted it to work and it did so right out of the box. I just plugged in the power and the ethernet cables without any additional thinking. It appears to know which cable is the uplink and takes care of everything automatically. My only complaint is that the activity status lights are on the back where the cables are. I do a lot of work at home and that work frequently entails moving large quantities of data around - especially between my workstation and my laptop. I've been using a cheap Netgear Gigabit switch for about a year. It worked great between my workstation and the server but never seemed happy with my laptop (a Dell E6410 new in Dec 2010).
