Product Description

England 1161: Ellen, a blacksmith’s daughter, wants to become a swordsmith, but for a girl this profession is unimaginable. Forced to run away from home, she disguises herself as a boy and wins the opportunity to travel with a famous swordsmith to Normandy, where the sons of the greatest barons are trained to be knights. Under the assumed identity of Alan, Ellen is able to learn the trade and become familiar with court life. But when she falls in love with Guillaume, a brilliant knight, her secret is threatened and Ellen must run for her life. Across countries and time, Ellen struggles to achieve her dream of working as a swordsmith and eventually forging a sword for the king. It is a quest rich in intrigue, betrayal, and treachery. As epic as it is intimate, The Copper Sign is a passionate tour de force that will leave you breathlessly awaiting book two, The Silver Falcon.

First of all, I gave up on this book on page 246.

Katia Fox must really enjoy torturing her main character. Any time something remotely begins to go well for Ellen, the main antagonist comes, takes it from her, tears it to pieces, throws the pieces in a fire, dumps water on the fire, pees on it, and finally buries it.

It is ridiculously formulated. Ellen has something good happen. Thibalt ruins it. Ellen runs away. It JUST SO HAPPENS that this one idiot, Thibalt, ends up in the same place as Ellen and RUINS HER LIFE. AGAIN. Ellen runs away. Lather, rinse, repeat.

This book is so full of angst, it makes my inner teenager angry. I'm very happy I didn't pay much for this book. If I had it in physical copy, I'd probably throw it out my window or give it away. Ugh.

Research - 5 stars (at least as far as blacksmithing goes)

You've got to admire authors who self-publish. After all, these are people who believe so strongly in their work that they forgo the standard route to publication--either because of impatience, because, after all, it can often take months, even years of submitting your work before you get picked up for publication, or because of desperation, as they've tried the traditional route and have been met with little to no success. However, reading a self-published author is often a risky proposition. Every author, whether a first-timer or one who's been writing and publishing for years, needs an editor, an impartial reader to go over their work, to trim the fat, to tighten things up and tell the author what works and what doesn't. And self-published authors don't have editors, often leading to bloated and unwieldy works of fiction such as The... Read more

Perhaps I am being too hard on this book because I did have great issues with the translation. A little way into the book I sighed and thought to myself "This book reads like a poor translation from a foreign language" and on checking I found out it was a translation! My next thought was that this was written as a YA book, but then some of the subject matter (torture/beatings/rape) was not really YA material. Phrases like "You're no great shakes" and people constantly giving bored shrugs.. descriptions are minimal at best, though long paragraphs/pages are spent telling us how a sword is forged!

Characterizations too were very simple at best. This book was painful to finish. It's not for those who consider themselves history buffs or for those who want a book to lose themselves in. What could have been an amazing story of medieval life and the hardships of a woman in a man's field (blacksmithing) really fell flat for me. I gave it two stars instead of one because of the...
